The best secret santa gift you’ll ever give

Countless cheap and tacky gifts will be exchanged this month as part of office and family ‘Secret Santas.’ However, this Christmas, why not consider something more meaningful than a novelty tie or singing fish?

With the country’s growing blood needs, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service is hoping for 10,000 new blood donors to roll up their sleeves this festive season. Blood donors are particularly needed between December 24 and December 31 to prevent a possible shortage of blood stocks vital to the treatment of cancer patients.

Will you help by taking part in Australia’s biggest ‘Secret Santa’ exchange?

“If Secret Santa is about giving anonymous gifts, designed to make someone’s day, then blood donation really is Australia’s ultimate Secret Santa exchange”, says Blood Service spokesperson, Helen Walsh.

“Your blood donation will be the ultimate gift to Australian patients this Christmas – and will have a far reaching impact on the lives you save, and the lives of their loved ones.”

There really has never been a better time to become a blood donor –  of course, only if you can. Take the quiz to see if you’re eligible.

This December, everyone who donates blood or platelets will receive a text message to let them know where their Secret Santa gift was sent. You’ll also receive a Christmas gift tag to give to a loved one saying you’ve donated blood on their behalf.

If you’ve never donated blood before, I can understand that you might have some trepidation, but there really is nothing to be afraid of. Here are some great tips to prepare, information on what to expect at each stage of the donation process, and contact details if you have any other questions.

Ms Walsh explained, “Blood will be needed by road accident patients, pregnant mums, cancer patients and even premature babies every day this Christmas and New Year’s.

“With many people taking time off this holiday season we need those who can to step up and be a life-changing ‘Secret Santa’ to Australian patients in need, ensuring no one misses out on receiving this incredible gift.”
